The Security Breach of MyFitnessPal
On March 29, 2018, it was reported that data of more than 150 million users of a popular fitness and dietary app called MyFitnessPal have been hacked. The data which was stolen comprised of the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. After the company noticed that an unauthorized person had accessed the data on February, they immediately started to notify their users through in-app messaging and emails. The company urged their users to take immediate actions and change their passwords. Unfortunately, it is still unclear who had orchestrated the data breach which stole the data of millions of users.
Under Armour, which is MyFitnessPal’s parent company, claimed that the users’ financial information were not affected by the breach of data in any way. As the company does not require any government issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers of social security numbers, the damage of the data breach is considered as moderate. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to access their system without being noticed.
And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen by a hacker may seem like it’s not much of a big deal, it still holds more power if you look at the bigger picture. For example, the app has the ability to collect precise performance and the location data of its users. This means that if another person has the capability to access a user’s account, then they will also hold the capability of knowing about the user’s location and how fast the user is currently going. Whoever holds the user’s data may then be able to track them down, putting the users in potential danger.
Securing Your Data
This is an important reminder that any personal data can be easily hacked in this age of modern technology. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.
1. Using Complex Passwords
Though a lot of people prefer using generic and easy passwords, it is still best to put some thought and effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.
2. Reading Through the App’s Terms and Services.
While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is of great importance that the users are aware of what the app can do.
While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
